Startit Center is an entrepreneurial and tech hub that aims to improve the IT capacities within the Serbian community through innovation, knowledge and inspiration. The center is placed in the heart of Savamala, Belgrade’s most famous and vibrant creative district.
Startit Center is the main gathering place of various Serbian tech communities, as well as co-working space for numerous startups and IT professionals. Since the center opened its doors just over a year ago, it has become a popular spot for many educational programs, meetups, hackathons and other tech related events.
With a space larger than 1,000 m2 and divided into two different levels, the center is located in an old building right across the railway station. The space that once featured a fashion studio, was given by the municipality as a contribution for the shared project they did Startit/SEE ICT, a non-profit organisation mainly focused on education and promotion of IT with an entrepreneurial spirit. After a certain time, municipality withdrew from the project, so Startit is currently paying rent for the space.
Original project aimed the creation of various opportunities pushing for the IT education in light of the rise of Serbian technology but also as a contribution for improvement of the high unemployment rate among young people in the country. The main part of the project was to create Startit Center as a place where those educational programs could happen, along with other events and projects that would improve the professional skills of the younger population.
Prior to opening the center, Startit was the initiator of the most successful non-profit Kickstarter campaign in the region. This event raised $100.000 from donations that would be lately used for the creation of Startit Center, among other projects.
The renovation and redesign works of the space started during fall 2015 and the center was officially opened in November of 2015. The renovation work was carried out in partnership with some of the largest Serbian IT companies like Nordeus, Seven Bridges and Humanity.
Since its opening, the center has hosted more than 200 meetups, six hackathons and multiple social events. Among these activities, Startit Center also runs Programming courses free of charge for children and unemployed people, Data Science courses, iOS academy and Startit Startup Academy.
In order to complement all of the initiatives mentioned above, Startit Center has a free use library with more than 230 books related to different fields such as programming languages, business, startups, marketing and science. The library expands its collection regularly thanks to the frequent donations from members of tech community, both private companies and individuals.
Besides the educational programs, Startit Center also offers a co-working space where young and not-so-young startup entrepreneurs are more than welcome to come and work, hang out, mentor each other and utilise the experience and help from every member of the community creating a healthy working environment with technology as main pillar.
