The Municipality of Ajdovščina is a public local authority in Slovenia. It encompasses an area extending over 245.2 km2 and has a population of 19,000. It is located in the south west of Slovenia, in the Upper Vipava Valley. It was established in 1994, its seat is in the town of Ajdovščina.
For quite some time now, the Municipality of Ajdovščina has been facing the issue of empty public buildings and consequently has a lot of experience in this matter. Old military premises represented the greatest part of this issue. Today, these military premises serve as a youth hostel, youth centre, outdoor sports facilities, tourist info centre, promotional centre for local products, public library, university branch and a municipal administration office, but many of them are still vacant. The Municipality focused also on other empty public building, some of which were reorganized into a homeless shelter, third age centre, museum and local community centre. Many of projects were co-financed by the EU.
